Designer Chairs: Traditional vs. Contemporary

Posted by: eModernDecor

When it comes to choose the best designer furniture people get in a dilemma. Well executed and crafted furnitures and designer chairs not only makes your interior decor outstanding but also beautify your office and outdoor areas. They have always been a fun way of transforming an ordinary room into something spectacular. But at times it’s become a bit confusing between traditional and contemporary chairs to decide which one to buy that would look great for a particular space.

Both traditional and contemporary designed chairs belong to distinctive interior design categories. Where the former offers an elegant appearance and the latter is subtle and urban in its appeal.

  • Identification: Traditional styled chairs call for ornate furnishings with elaborate carvings and an emphasis on motifs and signature looks. But contemporary styled chairs are born of more modern styles that has softer lines and deeper upholstery than its parent styles.
  • Features: Traditional chairs come with features such as bun feet, rolled arms, turned or cabriole legs and arched backs. Motifs such as seashells or pineapples are sometimes included in carvings on the backs of chairs and some sofas and chairs often have wood trim and large, dominant footings. But contemporary chairs have clean lines with soft edges. The chair legs and arms are simple, either square or round in shape and the backs may be tufted with large, fabric-covered buttons.
  • Time Frame: Styles ranging from art deco to post-modern are considered contemporary in comparison to traditional styles. In terms of furniture, however, whatever followed the modern styles of the 1950s, ’60s and ’70s are now known as contemporary. Now they are less sleek and suppler in appearance as compared to the earlier styles. Traditional furnitures of the 21st century imitate the carvings and the curves of the furniture styles made through the early 20th century and so preserves that stylistic identification.
  • Misconceptions: Traditional furnitures/chairs are overbearing, overly ornate or oversized. But the controlled carvings, softer curves and subtler patterns make modern-day furniture more lighter and compatible with 21st century lifestyles.
  • Considerations: Traditional and contemporary furnishings usually don’t work well together. A traditional chair designed for contemporary style space may add interest, but on the other hand can also appear out of place.

The classic designed chairs are entering vogue at a faster pace as interior space decorators and are available in the most captivating styles, variety of colors and craftwork. So, when you tend to be out for opting brand new chairs, don’t forget that classical ones have been in fashion.
